Philadelphia To Clear Homeless Encampment In Kensington: PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - MAY 07: A person sits on the sidewalk ahead of a clearing of a homeless encampment in the Kensington neighborhood on May 07, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The city of Philadelphia is beginning a long-anticipated clearing of the high drug and crime area where police are closing off part of Kensington Avenue to remove a homeless encampment. An opioid crisis has plagued the area for years and has become what many consider the largest open-air drug market on the East Coast. The new mayor of Philadelphia, Cherelle Parker, had promised to begin the clean-up and has been working with outreach teams and social service agencies to assist with drug treatment and a place to live.
