• Crews dismantle one of the remaining walls of the World Trade Center disaster in New York 26 September, 2001 taking apart a jagged seven-story section of steel facade that is the last bit of the twin towers still standing. The section had dwindled to four stories by early 26 September, with some pieces preserved in case they are wanted for a memorial. The facade, part of the base of the center's southern tower, has been one of the most photographed scenes of the devastation. dpa +++ dpa-Bildfunk +++

At Ground Zero -- where the twin World Trade Center towers once stood as symbols of financial prowess and modernity -- the ruins emit acrid fumes and fires trapped underground rise to the surface every day as contractors work to clear the area of some two million tonnes of rubble. The operation, expected to take at least a year, is being carried out in uncomfortable tandem with continued efforts to find the remains of the more than 3,800 people who are still listed as missing. dpa +++ dpa-Bildfunk +++
